Heidelberg is a romantic town on the Neckar River in southwestern Germany. It is known worldwide for its reputable University, founded in the 14th century, which is the oldest in Germany.
Heidelberg is renowned for its baroque old town, spirited student atmosphere, beautiful riverside setting and evocative hilltop castle. The red-sandstone ruins of Heidelberg Castle, a mix of Gothic and Renaissance architecture, stand on Königstuhl hill. On the northern side of the Neckar, the Heiligenberg (Saints' Mountain) offers the famous Philosophers' Walk with breathtaking views of the old town and castle.
Surrounded by forest, Heidelberg is a favorite destination among hikers.
